U–Pb age constraints on the Jurassic succession and paleoflora of Mount Flora, Antarctic Peninsula

چکیده
The spectacular fossil plant assemblage preserved in the non-marine Mount Flora Formation of northern Antarctic Peninsula represents diverse Jurassic flora that once covered Gondwanan continents at high paleolatitudes. depositional facies formation plays a key role tectonic interpretations and basin evolution models attempt to reconcile large igneous province magmatism, continental break up, magmatic arc development throughout Cretaceous. Limited U–Pb situ geochronology reported from adjacent units lack necessary resolution overcome ambiguous correlations biostratigraphic discrepancies. We present two high-precision zircon ages (CA-ID-TIMS method) distinct tuffaceous interval Hope Bay, which document terminal Middle age (Callovian Stage) for its paleoflora. In excess 1400 new collected specimens exhibit highly association dominated nearly 17 million years after disappearance Patagonia. This suggests similar paleoecological conditions were established diachronously basins southern Gondwana, possibly facilitating floral migrations response local climate change. Formation, proximity marine Nordenskjöld Larsen Basin coincidence with regional unconformity Patagonia point out complex interplay among development, extension up geologic paleoenvironmental Gondwana near end Jurassic.

Seasonal Succession of Free-Living Bacterial Communities in Coastal Waters of the Western Antarctic Peninsula
The marine ecosystem along the Western Antarctic Peninsula undergoes a dramatic seasonal transition every spring, from almost total darkness to almost continuous sunlight, resulting in a cascade of environmental changes, including phytoplankton blooms that support a highly productive food web. Despite having important implications for the movement of energy and materials through this ecosystem,...
